A quick history of the Farcaster feed. Back in 2021, the first version of the feed just showed you every post, starting with the newest. There wasn't a way to unfollow! This was ok because we were just a 100 or so weird internet people who liked hanging out together. We added follows soon after, when someone started annoying someone else. This hurt new users quite a bit because they started with an empty feed and had to do a lot of work to make it good. So we picked the most active users each week and suggested they follow them when signing up. It was built in an incredibly simple way. Every time you loaded your app, we'd run a sql query to fetch the latest casts, hydrate the links and images and serve you a feed. At some point, we moved this into a background job so it would run every 30 seconds, and slow down if you stopped checking the app.

What is the Farcaster team working on? 1. Stability - a platform upgrade introduced a lot of mobile bugs. we're fixing them as fast as we can. 2. Clarity - notifications, feeds and channels have "magic" default settings that work for most users, but not everyone. we're adding more choices so people can choose the experience they want. 3. Growth - we're running experiments to get new users, and to help all users get more discovery in the feed through good recommendations by the feed algorithm. 4. Video - we're making video a first class citizen, and we're pretty excited about this. we'll have a beta soon, but it will take a few months before we get close to the major video apps in terms of ux. 5. A new experiment to help creator monetization (more details soon!) 6. Miniapps - we're continuing to fix minor issues, update docs and support developers as they are launching. 7. Snapchain - continuing to improve the developer experience.

reposting my thoughts on chloe’s piece because i think it’s important for the girls, especially the ones newer to the space. i’ve worked in crypto since 2017 and i’ve experienced more than my share of bullshit and trauma. some of it public, most of it quiet. what i’ve learned: protection doesn’t come from formal structures, it comes from each other. -- i appreciate the honesty here, and i agree with some points.. performative feminism and internalized misogyny are real issues, especially in hypervisible spaces like CT. but I think this piece collapses a lot of nuance into a single, sweeping narrative yes, contradictions exist. but so does context. sometimes what looks like "subtweeting" is actually people processing harm. sometimes women with platforms are learning in public, imperfectly, while also trying to survive an ecosystem not built for them. there's no universal playbook for how to show up, and expecting perfect solidarity under constant scrutiny feels like a setup i also think it’s dangerous to frame complex behavior as “selective feminism” without acknowledging how power operates. in a space where connections = survival, some people are navigatinng real fear (of exclusion, of retaliation, of reputational loss). that doesn't excuse harmful behavior, but it does explain some of the silence! feminism in crypto isn’t failing because women are messy or contradictory. It’s evolving under pressure inside an ecosystem that often rewards compliance over speaking out speaking from personal experience: whisper networks exist for a reason. formal structures rarely protect you and the cost of naming harm publicly can be brutal (socially, professionally, emotionally). you lose access. you get labeled “difficult.” you become the problem for pointing out the problem. that’s why many women leverage their networks quietly, to stay safe, to warn each other, to survive. sometimes it’s choosing not to speak up because you know how this ends. so yes, there are contradictions. yes, people falter. but that’s not a failure of feminism, it’s a feature of navigating power while trying to build something better. if you’ve never had to choose between your safety and your credibility, you’re lucky. if you have, you know that survival often looks like silence. andd that doesn’t make you complicit. it makes you real!! let’s push for more care but let’s also have grace for people who are still figuring it out while trying to build something better in public https://paragraph.com/@intrusivethots/women-in-web3-are-some-of-the-most-confusing-people-ive-ever-met

I spun up a new channel called /videolab. To start, I'll be re-casting video content I come across on Farcaster into the channel and asking creators to share how they filmed it. The goal is to share our knowledge to improve video quality across the community. If you're interested in being a member, please let me know in the comments. All I ask for is help with finding videos, re-casting them, and politely inviting their creators to share insights if they're willing.

We're adding notifications filters to give you more control over what you get notified about. Go to Notifications > Settings to change this. Power users will benefit from stronger filtering so they can stay on top of whats important, while new users might want to get alerted more often.

Why are we investing in video? I've been spending a lot of time recently talking to users. Our goal is to figure out how we can get people to invite their friends to Farcaster. If we can solve this, Farcaster will grow. When asking why people aren't inviting their friends to Farcaster, the overwhelming reason is they spend most of their time on TikTok / Instagram / YouTube (no X / Twitter). So, video.

Hey folks -- we're making a big investment in improving our video UX. That said, would encourage folks to start posting videos in 9:16 aspect ratio (like TikTok, IG Reels, YT Shorts). Would also encourage people to add captions -- using CapCut, Captions (app), Descript, Kapwing, etc.
