awesome okay so let's go through what the social smart contract and the network code is the code of hammurabi was one of the first written legal codes and its purpose was to provide a degree of predictability to the world similarly our social smart contract implements a network code that governs this reference client it's a set of written digital rules basically ai prompts whose purpose is to bring a degree of predictability to the digital world an open weights ai model applies the network code to every post and account such that anyone should be able to rerun these rules on the same public data to get the same results the goal is uniform rule of code such that we judge conduct instead of identity and what exactly is the network code it specifies digital felonies misdemeanors and infractions digital felonies that result in bans include hate speech attacking others on their race religion gender sexuality class or nationality death threats or wishing serious harm on a person for example wishing cancer on someone scams examples phishing wallet draining fake airdrops guaranteed returns or various forms of unacceptable behavior like repeatedly starting fights repeatedly stalking accounts after they've blocked or muted you or repeatedly passing off ai writing as your own digital misdemeanors that result in suspensions include starting or feeding fights with others and flooding feeds with low quality posts digital infractions that result in warnings include spreading clear hoaxes as facts or hyping token prices repeatedly we eventually want to build ai models into the client to allow client side warnings of network code violations prior to posting but for now you can use your judgment to avoid digital felonies misdemeanors and infractions the network code also rewards good behavior teaching others something sharing something you built with details or helping others with what they asked are all rewarded so is original insight reason to behavior giving specific credit to others disagreeing civilly calming others down and correcting the record with evidence including your own mistakes the idea is that open way ai models can finally incentivize prosocial behavior on social media of course our team can't anticipate everything in advance so there will be some manual judgment calls still we think the idea of the network code starts moving the world towards a predictable rule of code that mirrors the offline concept of rule of law again voting to stay means voting for the network school forecaster core team to update the network code with the goal of building a friendly techno optimist community online alright yeah continuing on

this is the only time we're gonna read this whole thing then we can then we can react okay number two from the soviet union and somalia to the singapores of social media okay that was the how now let's give a lit a bit more detail on why we're moderating this reference client while also allowing you to create or join your own open source client over the last few decades social media has had two primary settings a the soviet union where users were censored without their consent or b somalia where any form of hatred including de facto incitement to violence can be posted without much consequence we don't think either of these models works in the long run instead we want a third setting opt in to constraints each client writes its rolls down and each user who wants to join that client reads them signs them and abides by them the rules of which the network code is the first are applied via open weight ai models uniformly to all users and moderate speech within pre agreed bounds some users will choose to leave a given client or be off boarded for violating the rules if so they retain their digital assets and can apply to join a client with different rules we call this decentralized democracy you vote with your crypto wallet your digital ballot and your virtual feet by joining a client by leaving a client or by building your own everything is based on manifest provable consent you consent to joining a client community and the client community consents to accepting you as a member in short the idea of a decentralized democracy is to recognize that a one set of rules won't fit everyone so the soviet union isn't a model and that b the idea of no rules for anyone isn't great either so somalia is out too so instead we want c many singapore's of social media and if all goes well this reference client is the first such social singapore and then the third one is goes into details on when you log in to the the the client what to do which is about the voting so now that you understand what we're doing we're turning farcaster into a positive sum techno optimist community which ultimately seeks to print itself out into the physical world starting with meetups and pop ups and graduating towards startup cities and network states the first step towards that goal is to institute a singapore like standard for pro social online behavior within this app as implemented via a set of digital digital rules we call the network code we think this will radically improve the app over traditional social media because a the goal of printing out into the physical world provides a collective purpose and b the social smart contract provides a legitimate democrat democratically determined publicly consented to set of behavioral standards it sets the foundation for everything else we wanna do including our digital economy and any possible digital asset because it means we actually have a community of shared values so if you wanna embark on this experiment in decentralized democracy with us please click vote to stay otherwise go ahead and click vote to leave or not now and you can find another client that suits you or even create your own okay

and dan had dan and and v had such a strong point of view about what farcaster was and incubated a community and brought people here who kinda believed in that and rich and the neynar season and stewart's kind of like i think just really carried that forward this really feels like a very different very opinionated stance and it's not just like taking the torch forward of the vision for a decentralized social media protocol or social network right
yeah it's a bigger vision it's a much bigger vision than just that from what i can tell
yeah i don't even know it's just different i mean it's like orthogonal it's just a different concept i think the the reason i think there's just so much to absorb right now is you have an existing social network of people who've been using farcaster so
there's like the the people who are using literally the dows right are using farcaster every single day and then you see something new and change and you have to go through the whole like ah what does this mean so i'm just thinking of the people so anyway so i'm just saying i i know there's a lot of people who are not in who did not get into this new client and right it's causing a lot of questions so we can kind of chat about that i i have always been a big balaji fan and and i really happen to sympathize and and like a lot of what he writes about in the network state so

in in his opening or like in or in the intro thing it does sound like the vision becomes whatever they're applying to this client is things that other societies and communities can apply to theirs like an idea of like create your own rules that will be ai moderated like mhmm as opposed to like just a very broad open social network it's like it becomes like a communication layer for startup societies

for me personally i'm sure others you're probably right yes i'm sure that is true but there you go but i i understand yeah chilling effect is one of those things when you think about free speech as being a problem but again when i think about the big thing with free speech in the us in the us is that the government it but via our constitution is not allowed to make laws that restrict free speech
asterisk time manner place exceptions in other words they can limit time manner and place of when that speech can be made for example you know if you're doing a rally and you're giving a speech you can limit where when etcetera you can require a permit things like that you just can't stop it completely but that is the government that has no effect on private entities so private entities can do whatever they want restrict whatever they want there are arguments that have been made about you know the town square mostly with something like twitter where it's so large and facebook something as much smaller social network taking a particular point of view definitely definitely not gonna apply but i get it i totally get
making a choice that doesn't work for them and i understand that totally get it
but you have to read long text yes you do you should always be reading your terms of service i know nobody does i literally did a assignment like that in my law class when i was teaching my law class legal strategies for startups where i had them they had to look at the instagram terms of service and somebody mhmm who took that class i it's been passed along to somebody else to teach it he kept the assignment in somebody in my class this semester my blockchain class just mentioned it and i'm like yeah i i wrote that assignment she's like yeah i had no idea i'm like yeah you're gonna have to go to california and fight in their courts if you if you wanna yeah if you wanna fight getting banned by them you should always read your terms of service nobody does but this one was a little different than terms of service for sure alright what did you just highlight i can't even read that

i'm your agent i think for me my biggest like i've said before i really have a lot of respect for biology and i've i've heard a lot of they speak i i the the concept of a network state really speaks to me

because i think i'm quite homeless politically these days i also but what was i gonna say oh so a lot of what he writes about if i take off my gm farcaster hat and the fact that i've spent time on farcaster i think i find it interesting i find it intellectually interesting and i think it's an experiment that is worth playing out when i put on my like oh this is adrienne who just like fell into farcaster because i was interested in a decentralized social network and ended up building gm farcaster on top of it and spent like how much time we've spent and made so many friends i have very different feelings and right the biggest one is i think i really like the vision of farcaster as like a having a farconomy like a place where developers could come and build a business or an app or content or get distribution or share your art and you owned your identity right but you you were protected from kind of like the the the larger social network platform social media platforms and changing the balance of power so like it really came from like the read write own philosophy
and it feels like that is going away in terms of priorities and and vision so like i can be like separately optimistic about this vision and think it's interesting but it's a it's a different equation for me as a an end user because when i read what he wrote albeit it's quite small it doesn't sound like oh this is a place where you should come and build your business it's not
it's not giving me that vibe at this moment at this moment it could it could be that's part of his vision we just don't have that information based on what's been released so far
