What’s up, sheeple? There’s a documentary about a famous horse tamer in Mongolia, someone who can capture and train wild stallions better than anyone else. He had a great quote about sheep. Each year, some Mongol nomads release their horse herds into the wild to live out the winters on their own. The herd of mares (females) and geldings (castrated males) is protected by the stallion (male, not castrated) against wolves. Each spring the nomads must recapture and train the stallion all over again. A lot of people have been asking what actually makes Degen different from the other Farcaster clients. And the honest answer right now is: not much yet. That was intentional. The goal for the first release was to get a clean, fully working base client into people’s hands instead of spending months polishing something in a vacuum. Now that it’s out, the real work begins. We’ve got a long list of ideas that can make the Farcaster browsing experience meaningfully better, and we’re planning to ship them in fast, steady iterations. Week by week, the app should start feeling more thoughtful, more polished, and more useful. The first version is the foundation, not the finish line. I think there comes a point where Degen Hub can be a real competitor to the main Farcaster client or the Base app. Different people want different things from the same network. No single client is ever going to satisfy everyone, just like no single browser or email app does. The ones that stand out are the ones that obsess over the details and deliver a smoother, more enjoyable experience. That’s what we’re aiming for. On the platform side, we haven’t made any final decisions yet. My personal take is that focusing on Apple first could let us deliver a truly great native experience more quickly, the same way some of the best third-party apps on iOS stand out because they lean into what the platform does well. Keeping the scope tight early on lets a small team move faster and actually build the features that set us apart. We have a lot of ideas to make Degen Hub unique and genuinely better, and now that the base app is live, we can start delivering them.

I hear from many young men that they find it difficult to meet young women in a public setting. In other words, the online culture has destroyed the ability to spontaneously meet strangers. As such, I thought I would share a few words that I used in my youth to meet someone that I found compelling. I would ask: “What kind of candles do you like?” before engaging further in a conversation. I almost never got a No. It inevitably enabled the opportunity for a further conversation. I met a lot of really interesting people this way. I think the combination of proper grammar and politeness was the key to its effectiveness. You might give it a try. And yes, I think it should also work for women seeking men as well as same sex interactions. Just two cents from an older happily married guy concerned about our next generation’s happiness and population replacement rates.

Farcaster continues to take away the fun features (custom reactions, animated gifs) and I don’t think @dwr values fun as much as he should when thinking about priorities. I understand that trading features and performance are key priorities. I support that but taking away the fun things that have acted as social glue is a mistake.

Wait... what? No more rainbow and wowow and gm reacts? They just quietly disappeared? Might seem like a small thing to some, but I haven't seen any official news about what's coming next (or even *if* there's anything) with creator rewards either... If FC focuses so heavily on traders that most of the creators and CLPs just get crowded out or otherwise sidelined, that will make me sad. If this keeps up, my days here may be numbered. 😢
