broadly speaking, there are two kinds of social networks - public (twitter, reddit) and private (facebook, snapchat) in a private network, encryption matters a lot because what you're saying should only be seen by trusted friends. in a public network, it doesn't matter because the intent is for *everyone* to see it

Thanks for writing this up. The Farcaster protocol is focused on real-time, public information. Don't use it if you are worried about information being public. Anyone is free to use the graph to build a privacy-focused social network. So nothing stopping someone from building something that focuses on your goals.

1/ People seem increasingly concerned about the term "daily active users" (DAU). It's used by other web2 social networks (in SEC filings!) and now other decentralized social networks; we use Meta's definition (below). Is there likely a better definition? Yes! Have we come up with a better methodology? Not yet.

Seeing Farcaster DAU chatter on my feed today and it's reminding me of the time I was put in charge of calculating user counts for a public b2b saas company. Active user counts were a big deal at the company. Founder and CEO talked about user counts a lot. Showed up in every slide deck, on our website home page.

“Farcaster must remove all the bots” This is a worrying line of thinking I’m seeing more often. The argument goes that it’s not enough to hide uninteresting content. It *must* be removed from the protocol. That is, someone must judge the worthiness of accounts and delete them from the protocol.
