this is a this is a complicated question let let's start with the positive as somebody that grows up in the states you are not born into a club to support so there are two kind of main things there's the clubs every country has their clubs that play you'll and that's the soccer channel right that's mostly club play you know english premier league the spanish la liga and so on and so on so most of the world is born into a family of fans and there's always like one black sheep that tries to support the rival of what your dad supported right so in the states we've got a choice and actually it was it was sixteen or twenty years ago after the world cup i was so excited about what i saw that i wanted more so i went kinda shopping for who am i gonna support you know what what even country's league should i watch and i took a survey and that's why i'm suggesting this now because that survey was like really really random how are you with hooliganism you know are you are you there were there were worse questions but so i i think there's something kind of fun about that so adrienne yeah you don't really have to worry over here and i i don't think there's a lot of gatekeeping what is the one

alright moving on what would the channel do so this is a question from the farcaster intern it has caused a lot of discussion and i think it's great some great questions it's they're they're doing some seeking to try and figure out what works what doesn't work with channels how can improve what do people like what people don't like so what what should a channel be for what channels still work today what are they getting right what would make running one worth the effort hypothetical hypothetical
if you

and more like here's the place where you can find about this thing like that's kind of the way we've used it but i think there's a lot a lot of you know folks have different thoughts on this and i i liked peachy had some really had some really good comments here it's a little long but i i think it's you know worth a read when i originally made my channels it said i would have to pay to renew them and i was okay with that but the day never came and we were we've been able to keep the channels indefinitely if i had to pay again i probably wouldn't renew most of them and would strongly debate why i would renew any i used to use channels to organize content it made some things easy to find when search was unusable great point now i've come to terms with the fact that casts are ephemeral i was trying to work around system limits using channels i used to use them because people scrolled them and i kept them curated so they look nice the main bar caster client stopped highlighting channels and made them more difficult to scroll so most people stopped checking them that was another thing for a while in the feed those you would see people you follow plus channels you follow so you would it was a great place to find new people that had similar interest like if you were in if it was a channel that you were posting and you were gonna see them if you were like into food if you're into gardening whatever another place to connect with new folks as soon as i lost the purple dot notifications that were new posts even i forgot to check most of them i've seen a handful of communities continue to thrive after the channels overhaul but i've lost most of the tools i used to use because developers moved on or pivoted or sunsetted the products channels went into zombie mode the network changed and now we all feel stuck the channel membership models were designed to combat spam if your channel had spam it was your fault most of us locked them down because we had no choice we had no moderation tools built into the client for a while and had to rely on third party solutions now spam is much better spammers don't target channels as much maybe we don't really need that model at all anymore other exceptions sure channel gates can be very useful to some communities but do 99% of channels need them now probably not so that was the other thing like if you're a member of purple you would be you could be a member of channel post there that was another way to kind of keep discussion on topics for daos and things like that the nouns channel was huge for a while it was it became like the the place where we would discuss proposals so it could be discussed in public rather than in a discord so i think things have evolved and i think a lot of that has to do with the evolution of the space right now like the whole crypto space it's not even just farcaster like we've had like a massive like exodus of people who've just they've moved on so that's a big part of it like we talk about you know farcaster dau being down and all this but like go look at crypto twitter it's it's you know it's not much you know obviously it's always been bigger but in the same percentage you see the same drop because it's just it's just the way the the market is right now so i think you know we were all like hiding in discords for a while and i think this brings things a little bit more out in the open and so i've always liked channels i've always liked channels as a as an alternative to that
yeah so i don't think i like the origin story of channels like i always had an issue with how they were kind of originally proposed because there was such an anti like to me they just kinda felt like hashtags yeah but i don't mind that well we didn't have hashtags you couldn't hashtag and then search on
it right
fully aggregate so it was kind of like it's a it's a permission to hashtag with civil protection because you had to you know pay 20 like or just you add the friction you add the cost so it'll prevent some sort of spam mhmm so then i think about well what are the use cases like there's probably hashtag based which is just kind of like topic aggregation and maybe ephemeral then i said there's kind of the reddit conversation style right right then there's the discord right so like community discussion and that's another use and i think we tend to lump all these like channels can solve all of them but any one of them probably require
someone with like a team of people optimizing the experience for that

and chatters chatters are now getting shouted out
on the website love it love it oh and we finally we got a new integration in streamyard where we can now download the whole chat which is fantastic because we've been doing that pretty manually just getting the list of people so this is very good and this is actually about that never mind professor and i love the people who show up regularly to our live streams and use the live chat to chat with each other and and to us and most of that chat by the way we love you on on x we love you on twitter but the more active chat is over on youtube even though there's a smaller number of people watching they are more active so that's why you see when we are showing on the screen a lot of times it's the youtube one after each show i scroll through the list and manually write down everyone's name who showed up in the chat and when professor sends the episode cast she always gives the chatters a shout out so i go in and like tag everybody we weren't storing the chatters in any database anywhere until a few days ago when i extended our data model to include chatters and went back and backfilled chatters through april so if you've showed up to a live stream and said hello in the past few months you now should have a badge on your gm barcaster page let's show that very fun you can see over on arjan's page he now has a little badge very cool and arjan he's been around for a long time
yeah and i guess i could go back like in backfill earlier than april but here's what it means i could go into our discord find our little chat where i'm like these are the chatters for today map it to an episode it's a lot to the tool

i'm obsessed there's now there's a second episode now this is apparently we're gonna have a weekly episode i'm i'm obsessed with this it's also very short it's like a twenty minute thing it's a like murder mystery game essentially but the people who are playing are like all like silicon valley like folks and a poker player like random poker player but it's like you know it's sam it's palmer it's brian it's all these you know it's tim urban it's it's crazy like that i'm like and i didn't realize that this has been going on apparently for a very long time that they've just been playing this and this is like the first time they're actually actually filming it and it's it's very entertaining is all i'll say i've been enjoying it what did you think

to talk about when you take one day off
i took two days off that's it i took two days off
this is not
this is not sustainable co week i know by the way so we have two weeks before we actually are taking a whole week off for the fourth of july holiday and we have a bunch of stuff going on like we have we still haven't got our creator sprint done so we're gonna have that information will be going out in the next couple days so that's the first thing second thing we also will have another round of cef we're in the process of creating that list and talking to people so if you have an idea if you've done something if you have a project pop it in the the c e f channel just slash c e f over on farcaster and let us know what you're working on and if it's something that's connected with clanker that's always better and we're also you know what we did it we did a large round in may to kind of start us off there's a lot of people who are still doing the things that are part of that round or haven't even started yet because you know we just got the funds out to them last week or the week before so you're gonna still see things happening with that for a while and we're we wanna see the results so we'll do another probably a little bit smaller round this time just to make sure we're kind of revisiting and seeing how things are working and so that we're able to iterate anything else you wanna say about that

we will we will be taking more vacation this summer yes
summer we're taking some time off we've got kids going to colleges we've got a lot of stuff going on but that one that week for sure we've had planned for quite a while that that is gonna be off we'll try not to do any last minute hey we're we're canceling a show but it was unavoidable
