When I originally made my channels, it said I would have to pay to renew them and I was okay with that.
But that day never came and we’ve been able to keep channels indefinitely.
If I had to pay again, I probably wouldn’t renew most of them and would strongly debate why I would renew any.
I used to use channels to organize content. It made some things easy to find when search was unusable. Now I’ve come to terms with the fact that casts are ephemeral. I was trying to work around system limits using channels.
I used to use them because people scrolled them and I kept them curated so they looked nice. The main Farcaster client stopped highlighting channels and made them more difficult to scroll so most people stopped checking them. As soon as I lost the purple dot notifications that there were new posts, even I forgot to check most of them.
I’ve seen a handful of communities continue to thrive after the channels overhaul, but I’ve lost most of the tools I used to use because developers moved on or pivoted or sunsetted the products.
Channels went into zombie mode, the network changed, and now we all feel stuck.
The channel membership models were designed to combat spam. If your channel had spam, it was your fault. Most of us locked them down because we had no choice. We had no moderation tools built into the client and had to rely on third party solutions. Now, spam is much much better. Spammers don’t target channels as much. Maybe we don’t really need that model at all anymore.
Are there exceptions? Sure. Channel gates can be very useful for some communities, but do 99% of channels need them now? Probably not.
Also the Scottish are having a blast in Boston and if you’re not following Freddy’s adventures you’re really missing out.

/diet channel is one of the most consistent and long lasting channels in Farcaster, with its own culture, people, own events and dynamics... even their own Virtual events! It's actually quite fascinating.
I'd recommend @gmfarcaster @nounishprof @adrienne @rish @farcaster to have a look at this little ecosystem which continues it's existence thanks to the tireless work of @mizu
A little pocket of Farcaster & Japan, which has been humming along quietly, be strongly.
Prof and I love the people who show up regularly to our livestreams and use the live chat to chat with each other and to us.
After each show I scroll through the list and manually write down everyone's names who showed up in the chat.
Then when Prof sends the episode cast, she always gives the chatters a shout out.
We weren't storing the chatters in a database anywhere, until a few days ago when I extended our datamodel to include chatters.
I went back and backfilled chatters through April. So, if you've showed up to a livestream and said hello in the past 2 months, you should now have a badge on your gm farcaster page. See @arjantupan 's as an example: https://www.gmfarcaster.com/guests/arjantupan
We will definitely keep chatters updated going forward, and I may or may not spend time back filling more episodes. It might be too much of a manual slog to be worth it.

Around the same time we shut down @ponder , my pregnant wife got laid off from her PM job at Indeed.
Brutal timing. We had no health insurance, baby due in 2 months, looking at a crippled job market. It’s part of why I’ve been quiet on Farcaster.

Hi Casters. I wrote about our reboot of our long standing analyst program after taking a year off and using AI instead. The bottom line is agents can do large parts of the analyst job but the human parts of the job require humans. Which is probably pretty obvious.
