Thread: how I think about the growth of AI capabilities and what it means for us as they keep getting stronger. I think the right model for comparing humans and AI is not any single dimension like intelligence or aggregate performance on economic tasks. Rather, I view both humans and machines as having a whole range of capabilities. This includes both physical (eg. doing things with our hands, walking) and mental (eg. strategic thinking, mental math, emotional intelligence). For most of human history, machines have only exceeded us in very few areas, eg. a strong early example is water and windmills. So we can look at the situation in 1500 like this:

There was a time in my life that I couldn't go 1 day without checking social media. Present day: - I only scroll farcaster - usage is all time low - nothing is really compelling me to change - I'm doing more productive life things (yay!) A few things i can extrapolate from this: - I prefer a more personal environment - If I'm going to spend time on social media, it's going to be positive and with friends - I'm not interested in arguing or rage bait (Twitter is a shell of its former self) Farcaster has an opportunity to target people like me. The world is getting too big. When this happens, people find comfort in more personal environments. Idk what farcaster's north star is and maybe they don't either. But maybe start with figuring out WHY people are still here and build off of that feedback. Retention and growth are built off of the backs of people who have been retained. Use their insights. Learn from them. And then recruit more of them 🔥

Enduring things are rarely built in permanent seriousness. The work and stakes are real, but if our building becomes so relentless that it leaves no room for joy, passion, or purpose, something essential has been lost. Between difficult decisions, stubborn bugs, audacious ideas, unexpected pivots, and hard-won breakthroughs, there should always be room for a mirthful moment among Builders. Perhaps the real treasure really was the Builder frens made along the way. Not instead of what we build, but as part of it. Every shared idea, ridiculous experiment, hard season, breakthrough, and encouraging word becomes part of the foundation. I’m thankful for the many friends I’ve made here, and honoured to walk alongside them as they build their dreams into Empires. Build with conviction. Take the responsibility seriously. But never become so solemn about building that you forget to enjoy these precious moments all together. And hey, you can always pivot to adding prediction market functionality. 😉

@farcaster @neynar Devcon 8 is coming to Mumbai this November (3-6), and for once it's not a flight-and-hotel situation for me, it's home turf. I'm applying to volunteer. Free ticket in exchange for shifts (registration, floor, info desk, discussion rooms, stage) across Nov 2-6, plus mandatory training on Nov 1. Applications close Aug 12. Two things I'm curious about before I submit: 1. Has anyone here volunteered at a past Devcon or Devconnect? What was it actually like day to day - worth it, exhausting, both? 2. Is anyone thinking about running a Farcaster Community Hub inside the venue? Hubs are physical spaces for community programming, applications also open now. Feels like a natural fit for FC in India given how much is happening here, and I'd rather point energy at something already forming than start cold. If you're building something Devcon-adjacent hub, meetup, Road to Devcon side event, say so below. Mumbai local, happy to help.
