Been talking to a lot of founders lately and I think a lot of people are disappointed with crypto because it didn’t become Silicon Valley. But crypto was never really Silicon Valley. It’s Vegas. And that’s not a bad thing. People come here for trading, speculation, entertainment, gambling, status, attention, community, and upside. That’s what the market actually wants, and the biggest products in crypto reflect that. Polymarket. Pump.fun. Hyperliquid. Even USDC / USDT are basically just casino chips, a place to park your money while you’re in the game. The mistake a lot of founders make is trying to build for the industry they wish existed instead of the one that actually does. There are still massive businesses to build here, and honestly I think crypto is one of the most exciting places in the world to build. Vegas is fun. And fun is a huge market.

Great questions submitted for the DEGEN AMA, for anyone interested: 1. Revenue (Mini App + Degen App): No revenue recognized yet. Right now we’re focused on making Degen App an exceptional Farcaster client first (new design, more features, prediction market trading coming, more in the pipeline). We’ll figure out the economics as we scale. 2. Growth: People are using the app regularly. We want faster growth too, but this is a long-term play. We expect a real inflection once the redesign + feature upgrades land. We’re not fully there yet, but we’re getting closer. Marathon, not sprint. 3. Marketing: Yes, we have marketing plans. Kicking off something exciting next week and continuing to evolve it over the coming weeks/months as part of a broader strategy. Brand + marketing revamp for Degen is coming, keep eyes peeled. 4. Long-term vision: Degen App is one product inside a bigger mission: building Degen into a premier brand. Think “Nike” (brand) and “shoes” (product). Brand comes first, products compound the brand. 5. Base / Farcaster changes: Strong relationship with Neynar, and looking forward to working even more closely with them. 6. Farcaster’s latest update sparked a lot of conversations. While the ecosystem explores new directions, we want to speak directly to the people who care about the social layer, because that’s where our conviction has always been. That belief hasn’t changed. If anything, it’s stronger now. Where some see a shift away from social, we see an opportunity to double down on it. Agree. A lot of the Degen story is really a Farcaster story too. In Dec 2023 in /degen, before token launchers existed, people were already experimenting with community tokens right in the channel. Small tangent, I have this hunch that @alon might have been partly inspired by that moment. Either way, the energy was there first. And I think the counterfactual is pretty clear: if $DEGEN hadn’t stepped into the gap and become the breakout Farcaster token, something else would have. Farcaster made that possible by giving us an open graph, verified wallets, channels, and a distribution surface that already had attention and capital sitting on it. We didn’t have to manufacture a network from scratch, we got to plug into one. On the airdrop side, I used to see it more narrowly, but over time I’ve come to think the early drops were genuinely value additive. Not just free coins but a mechanism that kicked off a specific kind of behavior and virality. I’ll say more about that later, because we’re building something in the Degen app that I think taps into that same initial loop and a core want people here have. And I don’t think the answer is token launchers. So yes, the 2024 meme coin/spec wave plus Degen pulled a ton of people onto Farcaster. But the platform had enough kindling that another project could have lit that fire too. I’m glad it was us, and we’re not done. Now shifting lanes. I think Degen app can be one of the top Farcaster clients. That’s what we’re building toward. If I have to bet on open vs closed systems, I’ll always bet on open long term. There are short run counterexamples, sure, but the pattern is consistent: open ecosystems attract more builders, more experiments, and eventually better products. On social specifically, Reddit and X gating their APIs was a strategic mistake. It slows innovation and pushes talent elsewhere. Over a long enough horizon, open social beats closed social. That’s why we’re here. Degen being early on Farcaster is going to matter, and I want us to keep pushing the edge of what a client can be. There still isn’t a Farcaster client that’s found the viral loop strong enough to pull normies from traditional networks. But just like with the Degen token, I think it’s a “when,” not an “if.” I’d like Degen to be the team that finds that loop first. Not because we have the most resources, but because I think we actually understand what people on Farcaster want. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think so. Quick historical note that always sticks with me: Reddit’s mobile app wasn’t originally built by Reddit. They bought Alien Blue and turned it into the official app. That’s a perfect example of a small independent team out innovating the mothership inside an open ecosystem. A lot of people have been asking what actually makes Degen different from the other Farcaster clients. And the honest answer right now is: not much yet. That was intentional. The goal for the first release was to get a clean, fully working base client into people’s hands instead of spending months polishing something in a vacuum. Now that it’s out, the real work begins. We’ve got a long list of ideas that can make the Farcaster browsing experience meaningfully better, and we’re planning to ship them in fast, steady iterations. Week by week, the app should start feeling more thoughtful, more polished, and more useful. The first version is the foundation, not the finish line. I think there comes a point where Degen Hub can be a real competitor to the main Farcaster client or the Base app. Different people want different things from the same network. No single client is ever going to satisfy everyone, just like no single browser or email app does. The ones that stand out are the ones that obsess over the details and deliver a smoother, more enjoyable experience. That’s what we’re aiming for. On the platform side, we haven’t made any final decisions yet. My personal take is that focusing on Apple first could let us deliver a truly great native experience more quickly, the same way some of the best third-party apps on iOS stand out because they lean into what the platform does well. Keeping the scope tight early on lets a small team move faster and actually build the features that set us apart. We have a lot of ideas to make Degen Hub unique and genuinely better, and now that the base app is live, we can start delivering them.

Hey Degens, Quick update on the Degen App release: the app is ready to go, but we're still working through a painfully long Apple Review process. We've now resubmitted four times, and this round we're officially filing an appeal. In the latest review, Apple claimed Degen tipping counts as an in-app purchase, even though we specifically removed that functionality from the newest build. It seems they might not have even opened the app this time 🤦‍♂️ We're doing everything we can to resolve this quickly, but Apple tends to move slowly. Our best estimate is that this process could take another week or two. We appreciate everyone's patience and support; we're so close to launch. In the meantime, we'll keep building 💪

Unfortunately, the attackers were able to steal roughly $300k worth of locked AERO and $200k from our Solana Degen pool. STEPS WE’VE TAKEN Since then, we’ve moved all operational funds and deployments to hardware wallets, brought in top security experts to reinforce every layer, and tightened protections across devices, emails, and infrastructure.
