fwiw, couldn't agree more with dan. sad, but true. 1. i spent most of last year experimenting with URL to IRL and social connection; it doesn't scale OR you need an entire product team focused on it (think 222, rodeo, timeleft, partiful or luma, etc.) and even then it is still a HUGE risk with slow growth. 2. farcaster is mostly crypto users and has crypto primitives (wallet, coins), but the average person doesn't want to hang out on a crypto social network so >half the existing content and exciting features don't make sense to them. this impacts user acquisition and drives churn. 3. rewarding content with $$ is simply not sufficient to attract new users and have them retain at scale; this was immediately obvious after onboarding the journalists or college students and experimenting with the creator rewards. increasing rewards, improving video UX, etc. was never going to change that. 4. my creator/user onboarding was hand-to-hand combat and the common denominator across the most successful onboarded users was the effort or attention dan, linda or i gave to the relationship; again, not scaleable. leaning into the wallet and tokens is the single greatest decision farcaster has made (outside of its permissionless primitives) to support growth and i fully endorse it, even if it isn't the vision i initially signed up for. in fact, i wish the decision to let go of creators / content / connection and instead lean into crypto happened sooner.

personal update: made the tough decision to leave farcaster. grateful to work alongside such a bar-raising team on what i believe is mission critical for the future — decentralized social. forever a fan! can't wait to roll up my sleeves and dig into what's next. but first, a week to soak up the sun. more soon :)

was wondering why i didn't see anything about mountainhead on the timeline here, but a quick search reveals: 1. farcasters did, in fact, cast about it 2. and it seems like most people had high expectations that weren't met 3. but i still can't decide whether it is worth the watch or not anybody else watch it?

overwhelming feedback from new users is that the content on farcaster is often too farcaster-centric. sharing a few topics i would love to read more on farcaster (and please lmk if any of these are in your wheelhouse bc i would love to help amplify!): 1. popular culture! trend analyses and insights on culture (and not crypto culture). tell us what do gen z and gen alpha (and sure, millennial) consumers care about. i know "men in tech" may not care about this, but plenty of women *do* and there's a lot of us here! 2. start ups! tell us which startups are hitting milestones, getting funding, growing exponentially — and tell us whether you think they are worthwhile businesses or not. 3. data-centric information about technology, the economy, psychology, and everyday life. i love seeing data visualizations behind things that we know and love. 4. more SCIENCE! tell us how pigs could solve the organ donor crisis or why sunshine is good for the immune system. anything! what do you want to read more of here?

one of my only requests to farcaster as more users join and reactive: building from zero on any platform is hard, and can feel extra hard when it seems there's already a strong in-group (as it seems here). if someone (re)joins and says it is hard to grow here or that engagement is tough, i encourage you find truth in it before getting defensive or snarky. the latter isn't going to keep anyone around, but the former might. i would love to see farcaster lean in and embrace new and reactivated users by: 1. replying to new users as much as you expect them to reply to you 2. sharing what's worked for you or others if you see someone share their struggles (and acknowledging it does take time and effort) 3. make someone feel heard, not unwelcome or inadequate if we want farcaster to grow, let’s be the reason someone sticks around and not the reason they leave. shout out to @keccers.eth, @matthewb, @bradq, @afrochicks, @garrett (+ many more!) who are really good at engaging with all users!!

strong opinion, somewhat strongly held: creatives don't want to create for "content traders" the word "trader" is inherently transactional — someone primarily seeking profit, optimizing for price movement without emotional or philosophical attachment to the asset itself idk a single creative who seeks that out

tons of users have been reaching out to me re: spam labels. when i look at their content, these are the 5 most common pieces of feedback i give: 1. don’t only post mini-apps. think of warpcast as early facebook: if someone only posted dolphin olympics screenshots every day, people would tune them out. 2. avoid overly generic content. casting "gm" or inspirational quotes is fine occasionally, but if your feed feels interchangeable with anyone else’s, it’s hard for people to connect with you. 3. don't use AI thoughtlessly. people notice when casts or replies feel like ChatGPT wrote them. it’s fine to use AI, just add real thoughts or emotions. authenticity wins here. 4. don’t repost stolen photos / art from the internet. farcaster values original content or curation that reflects your taste — not just what’s trending on pinterest, reddit, or X. 5. quality > quantity. you don’t need to cast 10x a day or reply to everyone everywhere. take time to cast things you would stop scrolling to read.

super excited about the green new user halo — an easy signal for us to know who is brand new to the farcaster community and make them feel at home. if you see a green halo, say hi! especially on mondays in the /welcome channel, where we’ll do a weekly intro thread for all new users. gg @woj @blockheim @gt

that’s a pretty surface level take. the most followed / promoted people on FC are the ones who were earliest. the majority of them are startup founders or builders, with full-time jobs or teams or families. CT meta and memecoins require a ton of attention. to be good at it. you have to be locked in to it. but most of the large, early accounts on FC are busy building their own companies or families; they don’t have time to get in the weeds on the CT meta. the best CT accounts are self-employed where the meta is a deep part of their job. it’s insanely impressive. i wish i could do it. both are locked in, but on different things.

there may be a tons of people flocking to farcaster, experimenting with products, and sharing thoughts on their experience — some positive, some negative. take their thoughts as feedback, not dunks, especially if they took the time to try what you built. assume they’re builders, not grifters, especially if they too have shipped widely used products. not all feedback is equally valuable and not everyone can be early, but i encourage everyone here to find a bit of truth in good faith criticism when it’s surfaced. @dwr.eth, @v, @jesse.base.eth, proxystudio.eth, and @slokh are masterful at this. create, don’t burn, bridges. and if it’s a bad faith criticism, then it doesn’t deserve your energy.
