I can’t make it to the @farcaster community call, so I’ll post my thoughts in case it’s useful. I disagree that growth of the network is more important than its resilience. Most users don’t appreciate how close the network came to SHUTTING DOWN COMPLETELY when Merkle exited. If Neynar hadn’t stepped up, then the private-validator Farcaster network would be gone. We wouldn’t be talking about any of this. I’m grateful to Neynar to stepping up and understand why growth is their main priority, but the value of this network is as an alternative to centralized social media. That is: open, uncensorable, and resilient beyond the life of any single organization. Merkle had unlimited runway and still the network almost shut down. If Neynar can’t get the growth it needs, it will shut down as well. The network will cease to be. The community must step up NOW to ensure the network survives. Last I heard, Snapchain had 3 organizations running nodes: Base (exited), Uno (exited), and Neynar. Hypersnap already has multiple times this many running nodes. Adding a hypersnap validator will create a backstop that ensures the network lives on even if Neynar exits. I don’t wish ill on Neynar, I want them to succeed. But if they succeed by creating another centralized social app then all of the users here today will have wasted their time. Further, it’s in Neynar’s best interest to make this network decentralized because that is the entire value of the network. Without it, there’s no reason for people to use it.

You can’t be too hard on the red button people. They are just afraid. They’ve seen the worst of humanity and don’t want to risk their lives trusting human nature. I get it. I almost pressed red myself. They aren’t wrong. But blue pressers are willing to put their lives on the line for their beliefs. And that’s special. I pressed blue not because I believe, but because I want to believe!

Without the fork, there’s no guarantee/hope that FC keeps running if/when Neynar shuts down or decides to pivot. The FC network is currently a permissioned set of nodes. Hypersnap is a permissionless set of nodes. Anyone can run a hypersnap node. Soon there will be token incentives to run a node. If nothing else, it’s a useful escape hatch if anything happens to Neynar. Philosophically, I don’t believe a VC-backed company can create a truly decentralized social platform.

Are you a chump or a jerk? This space is filled with both. Chumps come in groups, and they think things are true simply because they wish them so. You might be a chump if you think you own any part of FC or that Base is going to airdrop you some tokens that will give you some ownership of the network. Jerks take advantage of chumps. They are experts in saying noncommittal things that lead chumps to believe The Cool Thing(tm) for their own ends. For instance, a jerk might allude to you owning a network or airdropping token simply to get you to use the network. They always have the moral high ground in their mind because a) they didn’t technically lie and b) they are maximizing shareholder value. The thing is, jerks needs chumps more than chumps need jerks. So if you are unhappy with the amount of jerks in this space, stop being such a chump.

Had @chicago teaching us her community-building ways in the @octant accelerator today - he's a juicy tidbit for IRL events: "If you organize events and not a ton of people show up, don't be discouraged. It can still be meaningful and bring a lot of value to the people who attend, yourself included."

Channel changes have significantly change the « FC gameĀ Ā» we’re all playing. Let’s talk abt it Old meta: cast in channels for distribution New meta: cast in channels for connection The reasons for casting in channels has changed. Casting in channels is friction - you have to select the channel rather than YOLOing your post to your followers. The new changes add MORE friction (must be a member) while reducing algo boost. We will likely have far fewer casts in channels but hopefully those casts will get engagement from people who actually care about the topic. ā€œConnectionā€ isn’t easily measurable, but the idea is that you will more satisfied posting into a channel because the quality of discourse will be higher.

BCard was recently accepted into the @octant accelerator program and we couldn't be more excited! Octant is one of the few projects in the space which aligns with BCard's goals around sustainably funding public goods. We admire what Octant has achieved so far and hope to help grow the pie for public good funding with our own product. BCard x Octant seems like a match made in heaven šŸ˜‡

Real talk time founders. I appreciate the call out @chinmay.eth, AND it’s always been my assumption when building that my code will be stolen. Nothing we put online is defensible, therefore our advantage has to lie outside of ā€œthe codeā€. How do you feel about this, reader?
